Freelance AI engineering and fullstack development, from Hamburg and remote across the EU.

Für deutschsprachige Kunden: KI-Automatisierung, LLM-Integration in bestehende Produkte und Fullstack-Entwicklung — aus Hamburg, remote in der ganzen EU.

AI Integration

Connecting large language models to a product you already have.

Retrieval over your own data, tool calling, evaluation harnesses, and cost control across providers. I have shipped systems running on 14+ LLM providers and know where the costs and failure modes hide — a benchmark I published found a 16x cost difference between models for comparable output.

Workflow Automation

Replacing manual, repetitive work with pipelines that report on themselves.

Automation is only useful if you can trust it unattended. I build in the checks that make that possible — my AI video agent runs roughly 30 automated quality gates on its own output and corrects itself until they pass.

Fullstack Prototype

A working product from nothing: frontend, backend, deployment.

Built to be extended rather than thrown away. Two of my own products are live in the App Store and Play Store, so the path from prototype to shipped product is one I have walked end to end.

Discovery Sprint

A short, fixed-scope engagement that turns a vague AI idea into a decision.

You get a written assessment: what is technically feasible, what it will cost to run, what to build first, and what to leave alone. Useful when the question is still whether to build at all.

Questions

What kind of projects does Emil Herzberg take on?

Freelance AI engineering and fullstack development — LLM integration into existing products, workflow automation, and building production-ready prototypes from scratch. Typical clients are companies that have an AI idea but no in-house AI engineering capacity.

Where is Emil Herzberg based and does he work remotely?

Hamburg, Germany. Work is remote by default across the EU, with on-site days possible for kickoffs and workshops.

Which languages does he work in?

German and English. German is his native language, English is at C2 level. He also speaks Russian and Ukrainian.

What is his technical background?

A dual background: a B.A. in Design, graduated at 1.2 with distinction, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science. He currently works as an IT project manager on regulated healthcare systems, and builds production AI systems independently — including a trading platform with 170+ Python modules and three broker integrations, and an open-source benchmark measuring when frontier language models run out of new ideas.

How does a project usually start?

With a short call to establish whether the problem is a fit. If the scope is still unclear, a Discovery Sprint turns it into a written recommendation before any build work is committed.
